Tim Henman was made to sweat by Italian Davide Sanguinetti in the first round of the Stella Artois Championship at Queen's.
The British number one had to fend off a match point in the third set before winning a decisive tie-break to prevail 3-6 6-3 7-6 (7/3).
But there were worrying chinks in his grass-court game as he started his final preparations for Wimbledon, which starts on 23 June.
Journeyman Sanguinetti put him in trouble with a range of passing strokes and took advantage of some erratic serving from his opponent.
And afterwards, Henman admitted that he was a little disillusioned with his game.
"I need to change a few things and see if I can improve for the next round," he said.
"I've been working hard to be aggressive and move forward, but I play a guy who doesn't look like coming to the net once and I struggle.
"Maybe I'll have to change my tactics as the tournament goes on."
