I write this as an outsider to the camp this week.

Anything could be happening - new game-plan, marathon games of table tennis, new singing talent on the bus. I don't know.

I suspect, however, that the boys are training hard after resting on Sunday and Monday and are very excited and focused on playing the Wallabies on Saturday.

It has been difficult not to be involved, even in training, but I know that Saturday will be as tough as it gets. I will be at the game at Murrayfield, watching from the stands and wishing I was part of it.

I have had a quiet week so far after having my operation on Sunday and, feeling guilty about burdening my girlfriend with driving, cooking and general cleaning-up-after-me duties, I absconded up to Aberdeen to my mum's home cooking.

I was at a dinner on Wednesday night to celebrate the success of Royal Aberdeen Golf Club's Richie Ramsay in winning the US Amateur at Hazeltine earlier in the year, an achievement to rival Paul Lawrie's Open win at Carnoustie in 1999 and the first Scot in more than 100 years to win the coveted title.

What a fantastic victory - it's always great to see Scots, and particularly Aberdonians, doing well on the world stage.

Saturday represents - in the words of my Border Reivers coach Steve Bates - "a fantastic opportunity".

Scotland haven't beaten the Aussies in 24 years - not since Keith Robertson scored at Ballymore to beat them 12-7, in what looks to me to be one of the best results in Scotland's history.

I'm actually amazed I haven't been told about this try yet by Keith, who coincidentally sold me my last car. Next time I've got an hour or so to kill, I must remember to ask him about it.

We are on form though and go into this match with more confidence than in previous matches.

I listened to Frank Hadden on the news the other night. "We know we are capable of beating them, but more importantly, they know we are capable to beating them." Well said Frank.

It has been four years since we have beaten one of the big three southern hemisphere teams and a victory would be a great sign of progress, particularly in the lead-up to the World Cup.

Australia found it tough against Ireland last weekend
That is very easy to say, of course. Australia are consistently a world force and a win is not easily achieved.

Apparently the weather forecast is for wind and rain, which may not suit them. But, to be honest, I have never particularly enjoyed the wind and rain either, though we are probably a bit more used to it than they are.

It was set to be an interesting week at home, with my aforementioned girlfriend hailing from down under. She claims that she will support Scotland only if I am playing, but I have told her that is not good enough.

I will have spies on her on Saturday to check up on her allegiance. In return, it seems I am not allowed to support England in the Ashes series, a price I am reluctantly willing to pay.

My shoulder is healing well I think, though its only been a few days. I have two weeks in a sling, with no possibility of physio just yet. So I am hoping to head to Dubai next week to help with the Oki Warriors sevens side in the local tournament.

I'm sure the sun will do me some good, but it would be great to head off on the back of a famous Scottish victory. Good luck lads.
