Scotland eased to a controlled victory over Romania without managing to "smash" their opponents in the way demanded by head coach Frank Hadden.

A debut try from Johnnie Beattie and two from Hugo Southwell gave Scotland a convincing half-time lead.

Another new cap, Rob Dewey, Edinburgh team-mate Phil Godman, making his first start, Dougie Hall and Chris Cusiter scored the other tries.

The boots of Godman and Florin Vlaicu provided the other points.

Hadden had wanted a 60-point haul despite fielding two new faces for the first of his side's three autumn Tests at Murrayfield.

And two of the new men immediately put Scotland in the driving seat.

Captain Jason White held off three tackles before passing on to Beattie, following in the footsteps of father John, to power over the line after 14 minutes.

Godman, given a start along with Glasgow prop Euan Murray, slotted over the penalty from just left of the posts.

But Romania quickly responded and their power in the ruck won a penalty in front of the posts that was easily converted by full-back Vlaicu.

However, Southwell broke through from just inside his own half, chipped ahead and gathered before sliding over the line for Scotland's second try.

Godman missed the conversion but added another three points when Scotland won a penalty in front of the posts in their next attack.

A superb break from Blair led to another try.

When Kelly Brown was foiled a few metres out, a clever flick by Blair allowed Southwell the room to drive over in the corner.

Romania pushed forward and were thwarted by the Scots on the line.

While Scotland's White was taken from the field on a stretcher with a leg injury, referee Matt Goddard waited for video evidence and decided against awarding the visitors a try.

White failed to return after the break, with his place taken by a third debutant, David Callam.

The new man was held up a few feet short of scoring a try with his first touch in international rugby.

But, just as the attack seemed to run out of steam, Simon Webster took advantage of a forward-looking pass to break clear.

He unloaded Dewey, who evaded a couple of half-hearted challenges to give Godman an easy conversion opportunity.

Vlaicu landed a second penalty for Romania before James Hamilton - who gained the 1000th international cap to be awarded to a Scotland player - after Hadden made a series of changes.

A fine running move from the halfway line involving two reverse passes saw Godman go over the line for a try that he converted himself.

Replacement Cusiter created space from a scrum 10 metres out for Hall to power over for another try converted by Godman.

And Cusiter wriggled over for another try to make for a more convincing scoreline.
