Rawlinson punched Phil Vickery in the head five times |
Worcester's Tom Wood and Greg Rawlinson should have been cited in the game against Wasps, according to a Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel. The panel handed down a one-week ban to Wasps' James Haskell for head-butting and punching Rawlinson but the offence was at the lower end of the scale. Wasps' Richard Birkett was reprimanded and warned following his citing for stamping on Warriors' Netani Talei. The panel criticised the ref and citing officer for their handling of it. They said the referee did nothing as Rawlinson punched Phil Vickery in the head five times despite Haskell's pleas for him to intervene and this was taken into account when it came to the punishment handed down to the England flanker. Panel members described the referee's decision to penalise Vickery for the least serious act of foul play as being "almost beyond comprehension". The panel also felt that the citing officer had been lenient when it came to the Warriors' duo, saying that both Rawlinson and Wood should have been cited. Haskell will be eligible to play again on Tuesday, 30 September.
