Victor Matfield turned down a chance to join Saints last April |
Northampton boss Jim Mallinder has denied speculation linking the club with a fresh attempt to sign the South African lock Victor Matfield. Saints targeted the 31-year-old Springbok last April, but he opted to stay with Super 14 side the Blue Bulls. "I think he's a top-class second row," Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton. "But he's not a player we've been communicating with. "[But] we're always looking for high-quality internationals to join us." Mallinder was speaking after Sunday's 9-5 defeat by Wasps at Adams Park - a result that leaves Saints still chasing a first away victory of the season in the Premiership.
