Northampton's bid to sign South African second row Victor Matfield has fallen through after he chose to return home.

The 30-year-old had agreed terms to join Saints from French second division side Toulon and even got as far as having a tour of the club's facilities.

But instead he has chosen to join the Bulls in the hope it will boost his international chances.

Matfield, who was Man of the Match in the World Cup final, has signed a deal running until October 2011.
