Myler kicked all his points in the match against Toulon |
Northampton director of rugby Jim Mallinder says he has been impressed with stand-in fly-half Stephen Myler. The 24-year-old replaced Carlos Spencer against Toulon, Montpellier and Saracens after the former All Black developed a foot problem. "Stephen came in and he took his opportunity pretty well and he's been rewarded for it," Mallinder told BBC Radio Northampton. "We're very pleased with Stephen, his goal kicking has been excellent." The Widnes-born rugby league convert has been mentored by former England fly-half Paul Grayson during his time at Franklin's Gardens. And his ability to keep Spencer, who was capped 35 times by New Zealand, on the sidelines has made a big impression on Mallinder. "We're really delighted with his kicking and also with his play and his control," he added. Myler's form has also given the Saints coach reassurance that he now has strength in depth in the key stand-off position. "We need players performing well in all positions and for them to be pushing each other. "That's what we've got in that position at the moment."
