Newcastle interested in Nottingham back-row Kalamafoni

Newcastle Falcons head coach Alan Tait has revealed his interest in signing Nottingham back row forward Sione Kalamafoni for the 2011-12 season.

The 22-year-old Tonga international joined Nottingham in September, and has seven caps for his country.

"I've spoken to his agent in Australia, so he is a player we are looking at," Tait told BBC Newcastle.

"Me and Paul [Moriarty] are going to travel down in the none-too-distant future to have a proper look at him."

Having seen Luke Eves, Chris Pilgrim and Luke Fielden adapt well to life in the Premiership after switching from Championship clubs Bristol, Nottingham and Bedford respectively, Tait remains keen to scour the division for further talent.

Doncaster coach Lynn Howells said he's an outstanding prospect

"We've heard plenty of vibes about him, I speak to Lynn Howells at Doncaster about the Championship players, if he's seen anyone talented, and this kid is top of his shopping list," Tait continued.

"Howells said he's an outstanding prospect, but Leicester have already had him in their A team, so he's been spotted already by a few clubs.

"We'll have to put our hat in the ring like we did with Euan [Murray] and hope for the best."

Falcons signed Scotland international prop Murray in December following his release by Northampton.
