Hogg has made 138 appearances for Edinburgh since 2002

Newcastle Falcons coach Alan Tait believes the signing of Edinburgh back-row forward Allister Hogg is a genuine coup for the club next season.

The Scotland international, 27, will join Falcons at the end of the season on a two-year deal and Tait is excited by Hogg's pedigree and quality.

"Ally is a vastly experienced top international player who ticks all the boxes for us," Tait said.

"He is a natural leader, a fantastic footballer and real dynamic presence."

Hogg, who has 48 caps for Scotland, signed for Edinburgh in 2002 but a hip injury has sidelined the versatile player for much of this season.

He made his first start of the year on Sunday as the visitors lost 37-28 at Leinster in the Magners League.

"I am sad to go but I'm looking forward to the new challenge I'll face at Newcastle," said Hogg.

Meanwhile Tait has also signed Bedford full-back Luke Fielden for Falcons on a one-year deal.

The former Falcons academy player, 25, has been a key figure for the Championship side and the new Falcons coach Tait is delighted with his return to the North East.
