Hogg blow for Edinburgh and Scots

Scotland and Edinburgh forward Ally Hogg is out for the rest of the season with a hip injury and will miss next year's Six Nations tournament.

The 26-year-old was told after Edinburgh's defeat by Bath on Sunday he needs surgery to repair a hip problem.

Edinburgh coach Rob Moffat said: "Ally has suffered a tear in a muscle in his hip and requires an operation.

"It means he will be out of action for six months and so will not be available for selection for the Six Nations."

Hogg, who has 48 Scotland caps, had a 100% appearance record for Edinburgh last season.

But he was overlooked by new national coach Andy Robinson for the autumn internationals against Australia, Fiji and Argentina.

Moffat, though, does not believe that Hogg's problem is the result of the forward being overworked.

"Ally was involved down in Bath and could have played again this week - in fact, he really wanted to play," added Moffat.

"But the club decided he should undergo surgery as soon as possible.

"It shows you have to manage players. Last season, Ally played really well and there was no sign of him being worn out.

"He then played for the Scotland sevens squad after the main season."
