Cockerill looks to change style

Richard Cockerill
We need to play all sorts of types of game and maybe not be as one-dimensional as we have been on occasions

Leicester Tigers acting head coach Richard Cockerill says they need to start varying their game more.

Tigers have sometimes been criticised for playing a defensive brand of rugby.

And Cockerill, who is in charge until the end of the season following Heyneke Meyer's resignation, said the time is right for a subtle change in tactics.

"All of us want to play. We have to make the right decisions and know when to play. That's the balance," he told BBC Radio Leicester.

"The good sides play when it's appropriate and kick the ball away when it's appropriate.

"They go in with different ways of playing and we need to be a little bit better at that and our decision-making needs to be a little bit better.

"Moving forward over the next couple of years we need to expand our game and be able to play all sorts of types of game and maybe not be as one-dimensional as we have been on occasions.

"But things do take time and that's not an excuse that's a fact."

Cockerill says Meyer's departure, brought about because of personal reasons, was a shame for everyone involved.

"I was saddened by the situation he found himself in," Cockerill said. "He made the best choice for his family and you have to respect that.

"There's disappointment for him and everyone here because he made a big impression."

But Cockerill believes the new coaching set-up - which also includes Matt O'Connor and Paul Burke - must help bring stability to the club as if they are to challenge for honours.

He added: "We have to have some continuity, both from a coaching and playing staff point of view.

"We lie fifth, I know we're five or six points behind fourth spot but we've got to play those top sides and the majority of those at home so it's all to play for.

"We're not in a perfect position in the league. We'd like to be a bit closer and in the mix of the top to the top four.

"But we're a good side. We need to get through this international period and then we have everyone back for the run-in.

"This week has been pretty disruptive with players away and the weather, but hopefully when the weather has cleared up and we get into next week, we can have a full build-up to the Wasps game."

Former Tigers forwards coach Cockerill finds himself in the role of head coach for the second time in less than 18 months after he stepped in prior to the arrival of Argentine Marcelo Loffreda in 2007.
