Cockerill is in charge after Heyneke Meyer's resignation last month
Leicester Tigers acting head coach Richard Cockerill says he would consider accepting the role full-time.
"I don't want to say I wouldn't want the job because that's probably untrue," he told BBC Radio Leicester.
"But it must be right for everybody. I did the job at the beginning of last season and we had the best start to a season we've had in a very long time.
"I think I could do the job; we'll just have to see what happens between now and the end of the season," he added.
"I'm capable of doing the job. It's just a question of whether you want to put your head on the chopping block that early in your coaching career.
"It's something I would consider now because I've worked with [former Tigers coaches] Marcelo [Loffreda], I've worked with Heyneke [Meyer], I've worked with Pat Howard.
"I think it's the natural progression but it's come around a lot quicker than I would have imagined."
Cockerill played for the Tigers over two spells, including 10 years at the club from 1992 to 2002.
The 38-year-old former hooker, capped 27 times by England, is in his second spell as acting head coach.
