Exiles edge out Ulster
Ulster 26-33 London Irish

London Irish chalked up their second victory of their Irish tour with a deserved victory over Ulster at Ravenhill on Friday night.

Kiwi Matt Mustchin made his first Ulster start

The Exiles, making a rare visit to Belfast came good at the end of each half with tries from Matt Cannon, Michael Horak, Delon Armitage and Bob Casey with fly-half Mark Mapletoft kicking 13 points.

Ulster replied with tries from Ronan McCormack, Andy Ward, Scott Young and Paddy Wallace who also kicked three conversions.

Ulster started in a rush and were 14 points up in as many minutes.

First it was Ronan McCormack charging over for his debut try for Ulster after two massive drives by the pack.

Then after a great Bryn Cunningham scythe through the middle, skipper Ward was on hand to crash over with Wallace again adding the points.

It took the Exiles a little time to settle but when they did, Ulster found possession hard to come by and by half-time the visitors had taken a hold on the game.

A couple of Mapletoft penalties got London Irish on their way midway through the half, before Cannon charged down a Wallace clearance to romp over on 30 minutes.

On the stroke of half-time a beautifully-judged cross-kick by Mapletoft saw Bishop out-jump the back-pedalling Tyrone Howe and feed Horak to run in unopposed to give his side a 20-14 lead.

Wallace with a brilliant sidestep put Ulster back in front three minutes after the restart with a try which he converted himself before Mapletoft's third penalty saw the lead change hands again in the 54th minute.

Ulster had to defend stoutly following hooker Matt Sexton's yellow card in the 58th minute and just before the Kiwi returned, Armitage crossed for the Exiles third try.

London Irish appeared to move up a gear and after some inter-play between backs and forwards Ireland lock Bob Casey crashed over.

But Ulster had the last say when replacement Scott Young sprinted from his own '22' to score a breakaway try in injury-time.
