Jones says he is coming back fitter and stronger than ever |
Lions back-rower Ryan Jones says he will have to battle for his Ospreys and Wales place after nearly a year out of the game with a shoulder injury. "There's so much competition, (Scarlets and Wales number eight) Alix Popham is the in-form player in Wales," he said.
Jones, 25, a 6ft 5ins powerhouse, had a remarkable 2004/5, becoming first choice with his region, Wales' Grand Slam team, and the Lions Test side.
Jones is now back in full training and ready for the start of the season.
"I was enjoying the training at first but the novelty's worn off," joked Jones, who returned from the Lions with a shoulder problem which he aggravated in his Ospreys comeback game against Bath in October.
"My shoulder's fine but the rest of me is hurting! Seriously, it's great to be back in the fold and doing what I enjoy.
"There were some dark days there. I couldn't drive, get out, or do any of the things you take for granted.
 | I think the rest has done me good, I don't think I was playing to my full potential in 2004/5 |
"But after I knew that I was out for the full season the pressure was off and I just got on with normal stuff.
"There were lots of computer games, TV shows and Christmas food - and I even managed a few sneaky beers!
"The lads have all been giving me stick for the amount of media work I've been doing, but they're just jealous!"
There is no doubt that the Ospreys and Wales badly missed Jones last season, but he has vowed to come back stronger.
"I think the rest has done me good and I'm going to come back keener than ever, I don't think I was playing to my full potential in 2004/5," he told BBC Radio Wales' Back Page programme.
"It'll take a few weeks to get back into it, but I've got a lot more to offer as a player. I'm also about 10 kilos heavier than I was at the start of 2004/5.
"I've met [new Wales coach] Gareth Jenkins a few times, it's nice to hear the way he wants things to go.
"I'll have to fight for my Ospreys spot and Popham thoroughly deserves the Wales jersey, but it's all there for the taking and we'll be pushing each other - that has to be good for the game."
