Grimes fails with appeal
Scotland lock Stuart Grimes
Stuart Grimes had appealed against the length of the ban
Scotland lock Stuart Grimes has failed in his appeal against a two-match suspension and will miss Saturday's second Test against Australia.

Angry coach Matt Williams had been confident of success but had already named his team without Grimes.

The lock was banned for "trampling" on Australian number eight David Lyons during the first Test.

And Williams has picked Sale's Iain Fullarton to replace Grimes alongside skipper Scott Murray.

Grimes emerged disappointed after a hearing that lasted an hour and 50 minutes in Sydney.

"The season as far as I am concerned is done now," he said.

Trampling doesn't exist in certain aspects

"Other people decide them and argue your case. It is just really frustrating.

"I am disappointed to miss the Test match, it is important for us and I think we've got a good chance.

"I'll be behind the boys, train with them tomorrow and do all I can to lift them for the game."

Scotland coach Matt Williams slammed the decision as "inconsistent with the rules of the game" and warned the all-Australian appeals panel had set a dangerous precedent that could turn rugby's judicial system into a farce.

Scotland believed they had found 24 points on which to contest the original finding, but not one was accepted.

"Our legal advice was very confident there would be no sanction," said Williams. "We were very surprised on both occasions.

"There is no doubt it was over-exuberance, he shouldn't have done it and the referee dealt with it.

"At international level, for that to get a two-week sanction is quite extraordinary."

"Trampling doesn't exist in certain aspects. What it does mean is that players will just dive all over the ground, which occurred last week.

"And, if players dive all over the ground and they have got no fear of being rucked away from the ball, you are going to get some very negative games."

Meanwhile, captain Scott Murray was deemed fit enough to be included despite suffering a hip injury in a collision with Lyons during last Sunday's 35-15 defeat to Australia.

He said: "I'll be sore, but it's a six-day turnaround and there aren't many rugby players who go into a game 100%.

"I've been doing a lot of sleeping. You heal better when you do that."
