Australia captain George Gregan was satisfied despite his side's stuttering display in beating Scotland 35-15. "The first game is always a reference point," he said. "It's never as good as you'd like it to be, but we'll take a win in a Test match against Scotland.
"We started the game really well, we had good tempo and were moving the ball well but we fell in a bit of a rut.
"We started a lot better in the second half. It got a bit tactical at the end, but a lot better than the first half."
Wallabies full-back Joe Roff became the fifth Australian to pass 200 points in international rugby after kicking 13 points from two conversions and three penalties.
"It was a good win against what was a very physical side," Roff said.
"People have been underrating the Scots but they're a good side and they'll be very tough to play against next week."
Roff started at full-back in Mat Rogers' absence, while Matt Giteau and Clyde Rathbone formed a new centre combination with Stirling Mortlock and Elton Flatley sidelined.
"It's still a little bit disjointed, not as smooth as we would have liked," Roff added.
"But it's a long Test season ahead and that's a good start for us - something to build on now."
