| Sunday, 17 November, 2002, 17:55 GMT Maggs delighted by win ![]() Kieron Dawson scored a second half try for Ireland Kevin Maggs described his three-try man-of-the-match display in Ireland's 64-17 over Fiji as a "dream come true". The Bath centre often doesn't get the credit he deserves for his contribution to the Irish cause. But Sunday saw him acclaimed for a tremendous display. "I don't score very often so to get three tries is tremendous," said Maggs. "The boys have put in a hell of a lot of work with our defensive coach Mike Ford. "It takes a while to get used to it and settle into the pattern but we're getting there as we proved against Australia last week," added the centre.
Maggs cautioned that next weekend's international against Argentina would prove a much stiffer test. "But we're looking to take that extra step forward and we aim to continue that against Argentina". Fly-half David Humphreys said that the Irish pack had laid the foundations for Sunday's victory. "We managed to hold on to the ball for quite a bit of the first half," said Humphreys. "A lot of the credit has to go to our forwards for denying Fiji first phase possession". Humphreys said that Ireland had not expected to be presented with so many opportunities in the opening period. "The first objective was to win and we were going to play with whatever tactics were required. "We probably didn't expect the ball to go out so wide early on but the game opened up and it was pleasing to score some good tries". |
