| A job well done ![]() Gordon D'Arcy replaced Brian O'Driscoll at centre
Eddie O'Sullivan's original plan was to rest me for Sunday's game against Fiji but injuries meant I was brought into the starting line-up. It would have been nice to get a rest but when you are part of a squad you have to be ready to play and it was the first time I had played against the Fijians so that was good. We are satisfied with our performance. It was a clinical display which included some great tries in the first half and towards the end of the second. There was a quiet spell early in the second half but I feel it would be harsh to criticise us for that. It is hard to play at full intensity for 80 minutes when you have so much of the ball. We did go off the boil a bit but then we got it working again. My try brought me level with Brenny Mullin who held the record for number of tries scored for Ireland. It would be lovely to break the record but you cannot push these things. If it happens, it happens. I know people are talking about our World Cup prospects after this result and our win over Australia the previous week. Well, a couple of things need to be remembered. People should not get carried away. It is a big clich, but you are only as good as your last game. And those two games were at home and it is an awful lot easier than playing away.
I do not wish to take away from our recent results. We have played well, but we face a big test against Argentina. If we lose, the people who have built us up will have us back to where they rated us at the start of the season. The important thing is for us to continue playing well. The Fiji match was a day to remember for Kevin Maggs, he had a big smile in the dressing room after the game. It was very special for him, scoring three tries, especially as he is more noted for his defensive capabilities. There were nine changes from the team which beat Australia and a lot of guys came in and did well. Marcus Horan won his first cap, and Gordon D'arcy replaced me for his second Test. It was good to see Eric Miller back from injury and Kieron Dawson also played well after his lay-off. I feel we have benefited from having a sustained spell together as a squad, it has helped give us some cohesion. It was our fifth international of the season and the improvement is beginning to show. | See also: 17 Nov 02 | International 17 Nov 02 | International 10 Nov 02 | BBC Pundits Top BBC Pundits stories now: Links to more BBC Pundits stories are at the foot of the page. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
