Moffett sets agenda for WRU reform
David Moffett and Glanmor Griffiths
Moffett has criticised bureaucracy in British sport
David Moffett, the man charged with re-organising rugby union in Wales, says he will waste little time in implementing initiatives aimed at improving the state of the game.

The former Sport England and New Zealand Rugby Football Union boss was named as the first group chief executive of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) on Thursday.

He has pledged to put Wales at the forefront of world rugby and his first priorities are to increase funding and to boost the number of people playing the game.

"There is an expectation and a passion for rugby in this country which we have to meet." Moffett told BBC Wales Sport.

"We are stewards of the game. We have to deliver for the people. It's as simple as that."

Moffett's appointment comes two weeks after he quit Sport England, citing frustrations with excessive bureaucracy while driving through a modernisation plan.

Describing his style as "direct" and one who "walks the walk rather than talks the talk", he is unlikely to tolerate the unwieldy workings of the WRU.

"I like to get things done, I like to get results and I like to move quite quickly," added the 55-year-old.

The appointment comes after the WRU embarked on a global search to find a suitable candidate to lead the re-organisation of the game in Wales.

Moffett - who was born in Doncaster and emigrated to Australia 40 years ago - beat off more than 100 applicants for the post.

His arrival comes at a time of huge unrest within the Welsh game as debate rages over club and provincial rugby.

WRU chairman Glanmor Griffiths said: "I am delighted that we have uncovered such a dynamic and experienced man to take on the vital new role of group chief executive at the Welsh Rugby Union.

"We pledged to our clubs in the wake of the EGM earlier this year, when big changes were made to the constitution of our game, that we would find the right man to lead Welsh rugby into a new age both on and off the field.

"In David - who has held significant, high-ranking sporting posts in Australia, New Zealand and England - we have a man with great management skill and experience."

Moffett's previous positions include the role of executive director of the New South Wales RU and as chief executive of the National Rugby League of Australia.

The group chief executive is the key appointment within the WRU group of companies.

He will chair a six-man WRU executive board which will oversee the day-to-day running of the Union.

When the re-organisation of the Union is completed next summer, Moffett will be one of the 18 members of the Board of the WRU Ltd and also a member of the board of directors of Millennium Stadium plc.

He hopes to take up his position as soon as possible, but it will be no later than the first week of January.
