The Newcastle Falcons playmaker faces competition for the prize from France's Fabien Galthie, Australian Stephen Larkham, Irish centre Brian O'Driscoll and Scott Robertson of New Zealand. The award winner will be announced at London's Royal Lancaster Hotel on 13 November. Last year's prize was won by Australian scrum-half George Gregan. England are in the running for the team award along with Six Nations champions France, New Zealand and world champions Australia. Five players have made the shortlist for international newcomer of the year award. They are French back-row forward Imanol Harinordoquy, All Blacks flanker Richie McCaw, Australian Mat Rogers, and South Africans Brent Russell and Joe van Niekerk. IRPA president Tony Dempsey said: "Being voted best player by your peers is the highest accolade for any international sports person." | An All Black mystery
