The Rugby Football Union has reportedly held informal talks with both countries about the tournament, which could be played as early as 2004.

The series, to be played annually at Twickenham, would see the three sides meet every year, with the top two playing out a final at the end of November.

But Wilkinson has told BBC Sport Online that any new competition must have the full backing of England's top clubs.

"While playing any of the Southern Hemisphere sides always remains an honour, my concern is for the players and the clubs who pay their wages," he said.

"Unless the entire global season is thought through, and thought through well, the extra burden of such an intense tournament could have a debilitating affect on those sides taking part.

"There is a lot of rugby to be played from November onwards, so it's important to keep things in check."

The Falcons captain suggested that club rugby must not be left to fend for itself, while the international game prospers.

"The implementation of a new series must be sympathetic to the clubs who provide the players," he wrote.

"Their needs can sometimes get lost amid the hype that international rugby creates, but they remain vital to the health of the sport in this country, and they, more than anyone, have the players best interests at heart."
