Welsh blend pleases Charvis
Pontypridd pair Gethin Jenkins and Michael Owen should be a big part of Wales' future
Gethin Jenkins and Michael Owen provide youth
Wales captain Colin Charvis believes the squad has a good mix of youth and experience as they prepare for the upcoming autumn international series.

Coach Steve Hansen unveiled Charvis as his skipper for the four-match series on Tuesday, a vote of confidence following his performance on the summer tour to South Africa.

The Swansea backrow was heralded for his leadership qualities of an inexperienced squad as Wales pushed the Springboks close in both Test matches.

We need to be taking hold of the Welsh jersey and putting pride back into it
Colin Charvis

Charvis is looking forward to continuing the development of another largely untested national squad.

"One of the major plusses to emerge from South Africa was that we developed as a squad," Charvis said.

"The younger players performed very well and if I am labelled a good captain because of that then so be it.

"I don't think my captaincy had any relevance as to how the players performed out there.

"We still need to develop a lot with the team we have got over the next 12 months.

"However, there is a good mix of young in-form players and some older heads, who Steve Hansen has brought in for these matches."

Despite the disappointing showing by Welsh clubs in the Heineken Cup over the last couple of weeks, Charvis remains upbeat about the national side's prospects.

"Any problem that players have had on the club front they have got to put to the back of their mind and play accordingly.

"Everybody has tried to build this series up as three games building to New Zealand - but every opponent we face is going to be very tough and we need to produce big performances throughout the series.

"Everybody looks at results but at this stage we need to be taking hold of the Welsh jersey and putting pride back into it, showing massive enthusiasm just to play for their country."
