England target home Sevens win

IRB World Sevens Series, 24&25 May, Twickenham

England expect a strong showing on home ground after naming an experienced squad for the London Sevens at Twickenham on Friday and Saturday.

Coach Joe Lydon has selected five full internationals in a 12-man squad captained by Phil Greening for the penultimate round of the IRB World Sevens Series.

The Wasps hooker will lead club-mates Josh Lewsey and Paul Sampson, with Gloucester's Henry Paul and Harlequins' Nick Duncombe the other capped players.

New Zealand have already retained their World Seven Series title with victory in the last round in Malaysia.

World Sevens Series leading standings (nine rounds)
New Zealand 158pts
South Africa 112pts
Fiji 106pts
England 98pts
Australia 88pts
Samoa 80pts
Argentina 80pts

But there is still plenty to play for in the closing events as the seedings for this summer's Commonwealth Games will be allocated according to the series' final standings.

New Zealand may be assured of top seed status, but coach Gordon Tietjens has still opted to strengthen his squad for Twickenham by calling up two Super 12 players.

Hurricanes wing Brad Fleming and Chiefs centre Nick Collins join the party, while inspirational captain Eric Rush also returns after missing two rounds with a broken hand.

New Zealand, who beat Australia in the 2001 Twickenham final, have won five of this year's nine rounds to date.

Even if second-placed South Africa take the maximum 20 points in each of the closing two events, they will not be able to claw back the 46-point lead the Kiwis have built.

But with just 24 points covering South Africa, Australia, Fiji and England, the remaining podium places are still up for grabs.

England coach Lydon said: "It will be crucial that we consolidate our present fourth position to go into the Commonwealth Games with the best possible seeding, giving us the best chance of success."

Scotland have named two members of their summer tour party, Glasgow's Donnie Macfadyen and The Borders' Iain Fairley.

And Ireland, coached by former Test flanker Denis McBride, enter their first Sevens Series event of the year.

England squad: White-Cooper (Harlequins), Roques (Saracens), Greening (Wasps, capt), May (Newcastle), Paul (Gloucester), Lewsey (Wasps), Sampson (Wasps), Stephenson (Newcastle), Barrett (London Irish), Gollings (Harlequins), Haughton (Saracens), Duncombe (Harlequins).

London Sevens draw:

Pool A: New Zealand, Australia, Georgia, Portugal
Pool B: England, Samoa, Canada, Spain
Pool C: South Africa, Argentina, France, Ireland
Pool D: Fiji, Wales, Scotland, Russia
