Scotland emerged as winners of the Bowl competition in the IRB World Series Malaysia Sevens with an easier than expected victory over Korea by 41-12 at the Petaling Jaya Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

It was a superb effort by the Scots against a side that had dismissed Canada in the Bowl semi-final.

But the Scots, saving the best effort last, made their first-half performance count.

Glasgow flanker Gareth Flockhart, who played a key part in the Scots physical approach to the match, said: "We simply blew them apart in the first five minutes."

Scotland made a crisp start with a try by David Gray and thereafter never looked back.

Two further tries by Gray and one apiece by Flockhart and Scott Paterson gave the Scots a handsome 29-0 lead at half time.

A fourth try by Gray and one by substitute Charlie Keenan sealed a deserved win for the Scots, who will now go into the next IRB World Series Sevens tournament at Twickenham with confidence and a better seeding.

Scotland had reached the final after defeating Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) by 14-7 in a close match.

The Scots opened strongly with a well-worked move that produced a try under the posts for Darren Burns, leaving Clark Laidlaw with an easy conversion.

Taipei hit back with a converted try to level the scores at the break.

Then, as a tropical rainstorm hit the stadium, Scotland played a conservative game before engineering a try for Charlie Keenan, the winger kicking ahead, before gathering skilfully to run in under the posts. Laidlaw again converted.

Scotland had missed out on qualifying for the quarter-finals of the main competition, having been edged out in their group on points difference by Samoa.

They then defeated host nation Malaysia by 33-5 in the quarter-finals of the Bowl.

Scotland squad: O Brown, D Burns, I Fairley, G Flockhart, D Gray, A Hotson, C Keenan, G Kiddie, C Laidlaw, G Lawson, S Lamont, S Paterson.

Group A New Zealand, Wales, Canada, Malaysia
Group B Fiji, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore
Group C South Africa, Argentina, Korea, Chinese Taipei
Group D England, Australia, Japan, Thailand
