Sale captain Jason Robinson blamed a lack of precision for the Sharks' 11-6 defeat away to Biarritz in the Heineken Cup quarter-finals on Sunday. "Unfortunately we didn't come away with a result and that was down to small errors," he said.
"That game was played at Test-match pace and in those conditions small errors tend to be highlighted.
"If we want to get further in this competition we'll have to improve, but we'll learn from this experience."
With Andrew Sheridan injured and Sebastien Chabal suspended, Sale lacked a ball-carrying forward to make inroads up front but Robinson felt they still possessed enough firepower to win.
"Andrew and Sebastien are big players and it would have been nice to have them out there," said Robinson.
"But you can't make excuses. Injuries happen to both sides and we could have won with the team we fielded."
Two Charlie Hodgson penalties were all Sale could muster at the Estadio Anoeta, home of Spanish football club Real Sociedad, but Robinson was still proud of his players.
"We knew it would be an intimidating atmosphere. We probably had 800-1,000 people here and they had 31,000," he said.
"Biarritz are a very good team - well-organised and they don't give you much.
"They did well to slow down our ball. I just felt we needed ball that touch earlier in order to make a few breaks.
"I'm proud of the boys. Our main aim at the start of the season was to qualify for the knockout stages, which we hadn't done before, and today we nearly made the semi-finals."
