Wales fly-half Stephen Jones returned from injury in Saturday's all-French Heineken Cup tie at Stade Francais. Jones missed the reverse fixture last weekend, which Stade won 16-12, because of an ankle injury.
But the Welshman could do little to prevent Clermont seeing their qualification hopes disappear as they went down 47-28 in Paris.
It was their third pool defeat in four matches, Stade scoring six tries to move to the top of Pool Three.
