Wales fly-half Stephen Jones scored 14 points on his return from ankle injury, converting all Clermont's tries and adding two penalties.

Shane Williams' early try had given the Ospreys hope, but they then scored just nine points from Shaun Connor's boot.

Alexandre Audebert, Breyton Paulse, Gonzalo Longo-Elia and Sam Broomhall got the tries for the home side.

The Ospreys got a dream start when winger Williams jumped to catch Connor's clever cross-field kick to score after just four minutes.

But some weak tackling then allowed Clermont centre Raphael Chanal to burst through before sending flanker Audebert under the posts.

Ospreys full-back Damien Karauna then failed to deal with nothing more than a speculative kick that handed Breyton Paulse their second try on a plate.

Connor brought the Ospreys back into the tie with a drop goal on the stroke of half-time and then a second penalty three minutes into the second half as the Ospreys continued to hold their own against a powerful unit.

Trailing 20-14, a precious away win was clearly within their grasp but their defensive frailties hurt them once again as Clermont flexed their muscles in the final 20 minutes.

The Ospreys finally buckled after concerted pressure from Clermont's forwards that ended with Longo-Elia driving over.

Flanker Broomhall went over for the try of the match after a flowing move to clinch a bonus point that leaves Pool Three wide open after the first two rounds.
