Gloucester trounced Italian champions Treviso to sail through to the quarter-finals of the Heineken Cup on a windy evening at Kingsholm.

The home side ran in six tries for a bonus point to progress as Pool Five runners-up behind Munster.

The west-country side scored four tries in the first half to lead 28-6 at the break before easing away.

Centre Henry Paul kicked 12 points as he celebrated his call-up to England's Six Nations squad.

Gloucester qualified as best runners-up and could now face Munster, who beat Bourgoin in Limerick, or one of Wasps and Llanelli, who both play on Sunday.

Playing into the biting breeze, Gloucester went behind to an early penalty from Treviso's former Irish international full-back Simon Mason.

But the Cherry and Whites opened their account after 11 minutes when fly-half Duncan McRae put in wing James Simpson-Daniel for his sixth try of the tournament.

Paul added the conversion before Mason responded with a second penalty midway through the half.

But Gloucester quickly snatched a second try when full-back Jon Goodridge finished off number eight James Forrester's good work.

Paul stroked the conversion before Gloucester went over again through centre Robert Todd.

Treviso were further hampered when flanker Salvatore Garozzo was sin-binned for a technical offence five minutes before the break.

Gloucester's pack sensed blood and French referee Eric Darriere awarded the home side a penalty try which Paul converted before the whistle.

Coach Nigel Melville's team had problems of their own when substitute prop Rodrigo Roncero was yellow-carded on 46 minutes.

But flanker Peter Buxton soon added a fifth try to negate the setback.

Treviso managed to conjure up some fight and scored a try of their own through replacement Darrel Eigner.

But Gloucester wing Marcel Garvey made light of the heavy going and danced his way over to add the final gloss to the scoreline.
