The Blues avoided finishing bottom of Heineken Cup Pool Three with a morale boosting win over Sale Sharks.

Rhys Williams and Jamie Robinson scored first-half tries, and a penalty try after the break wrapped up the victory.

Sale's points came through a Johnny Roddam try, converted by Braam van Straaten.

French club Biarritz qualify for the quarter-finals as pool winners.

Sale dominated the early exchanges with the backing of a gale-force wind, but stout Blues defence keep them at bay.

And it was the home side who took the lead after 13 minutes on their first foray into the Sale half.

There has been a lot of criticism of the Cardiff pack, but we've shown we can compete

Cardiff Blues coach
Fly-half Robinson knifed through to feed brother Jamie, who linked with centre Tom Shanklin to send full-back Williams racing beneath the posts.

The try's architect Robinson converted.

Sale immediately restored the pressure and were rewarded when lively hooker Roddam burst through from a maul five yards out.

Despite the continuing territorial domination of the visitors, it was the Blues who scored again before the break.

Once more it was Nicky Robinson who created the score. His inch-perfect cross kick was gathered on the right touchline by Williams who passed inside for Jamie Robinson to cross.

A magnificent break by Williams brought the Blues' third try, the Wales international racing 60 yards from deep in his own half and kicking ahead for Craig Morgan to chase.

You always want to win games but today it wasn't the be-all and end-all
Jim Mallinder,
Sale coach
The wing was pulled back by opposite number James Hoyle - and Irish referee David McHugh awarded a penalty try which Nicky Robinson converted.

He added a 40-yard penalty which prompted Sale to introduce England World Cup winner Jason Robinson.

Blues substitute Ken Fourie was given a yellow card after a touch-judge spotted an infringement.

But Sale were unable to capitalise on the extra man, or Robinson's arrival, and the Blues finished comfortable winners.
