Toulouse beat Edinburgh and in the process leapfrogged the Scots to take top spot in Pool 2 of the Heineken Cup.

It was a vital win for the defending champions, condemning Edinburgh to an away game in the quarter-finals.

The French giants ran in four tries as they convincingly extended their unbeaten home run to 29 matches.

Christian Labit, Isitolo Maka, Yannick Bru and Frederic Michalak all crossed to ensure Toulouse go into the quarter-finals as number one seeds.

Edinburgh initially thrived in the greasy conditions and had all the early pressure.

However, Laney missed with a penalty attempt and a drop goal and it was Toulouse who opened the scoring through an Elissalde penalty after 15 minutes.

I could not fault the guys for the effort they put in
Edinburgh coach Frank Hadden

With half-an-hour played the mercurial fly-half Frederic Michalak sparked into life and his incisive break led to concerted Toulouse pressure which ended with a second penalty for Elissalde.

The Scots' cause was not helped by the loss of influential fly-half Chris Paterson and full-back Derrick Lee to injury and when they fell 9-0 behind to a third Elissalde penalty things looked bleak for Edinburgh.

To make matters worse Laney missed a second penalty on the stroke of half-time and the game was as good as over within two minutes of the re-start as Labit powered over for a converted try.

We will need to improve further to progress
Toulouse coach Guy Noves

With a 16-0 lead Toulouse began to open up and, after Simon Taylor had been sin-binned, only brave defence from Edinburgh prevented Toulouse from scoring from a series of five-metre scrums.

But the Scots could not hold out for long and with Taylor absent Toulouse added two more tries through Isitolo Maka, the elder of the two Maka brothers, and the replacement hooker Bru.

Michalak rounded things off with a fine chip and chase as Toulouse demonstrated why they are the reigning European champions.
