Edinburgh are on target for the knock-out stages of the Heineken Cup after beating Leeds Tykes.

The Scottish side's hooker, Dougie Hall, scored the only try of the match as the hosts came back from 9-3 down.

Leeds stand-in fly-half Tim Walsh scored all his side's points from the boot in the first half.

The hosts worked their way back into contention with a hat-trick of penalties from Brendan Laney, before Hall burrowed over for his crucial try.

Edinburgh coach Frank Hadden said: "Brendan did a marvellous job. He is a natural leader as well as being a wonderful all-round footballer - as he showed to the full.

"We didn't panic when we were under pressure and ground out a very good win."

Leeds coach Phil Davies was left to rue not collecting more points during a first half in which Phil Murphy was sent to the sin bin.

"We paid the penalty for not taking our chances when we had them," Davies said.

"We knew Edinburgh would come back strongly at us in the second half and we should have put more points in the bank when we were on top before the interval."

Having turned around 9-6 down, Laney landed two penalties before Hall touched down.

Derrick Lee's drop-goal attempt was charged down but he reclaimed the ball to set up a telling raid.

The ball was quickly recycled, the pack rumbled over the line and Hall gleefully plunged for the vital first touch, Laney adding the extras with the conversion to take his haul to 14.

The Gunner's stood strong in the face of a late Leeds blitz and will now take their 100% record to Headingley for a re-match in a week's time.

"Leeds are a very stubborn and talented team and we are under no illusions the trip to Headingley will be very, very tough," Hadden added.
