Henry Paul buried the ghosts of last season as he guided Gloucester past Munster at Kingsholm on Saturday.

Paul kicked 17 points and set up a second-half try for James Simpson-Daniel as Gloucester gained revenge for last season's nightmare.

Munster never looked like causing the Cherry and Whites too much trouble in the end.

Ronan O'Gara kicked two penalties while Anthony Horgan scored a late try.

But the game belonged to Paul who had a nightmare in last season's competition when Munster stole qualification from Gloucester with that 33-6 victory in the return leg.

A very shaky Paul was full-back that day, but he looked the finished article at centre as he controlled the game with aplomb.

He only missed one kick at goal while his deft touches from hand and boot kept Gloucester going forward.

It was a rugged confrontation, as was expected, but it was Gloucester who always held the whip hand although both sides went in all-square at the break with O'Gara and Paul swapping penalties.

Munster took the lead for the first time in the 44th minute with a second penalty by O'Gara after Rob Henderson burst through the midfield to set up position.

But Gloucester, who were always willing to play the expansive game, charged ahead two minutes later.

They had stretched the Munster defence when Paul put in a delicate kick for Simpson-Daniel to use his pace to win the race for the touchdown.

Paul converted and then added three unanswered penalties as Munster's discipline began to waver.

But the Irish side charged back into contention with a well-engineered try by winger Horgan in the 72nd minute.

However, Paul finished the job near the end when the Gloucester pack made ground he popped over a straight-forward dropped goal in a game which he described as quick.

''It was a real hectic game, but it was played in an excellent spirit,'' he said. ''It was a very fast game and in the conditions there was a lot of skill shown.

''Both teams were trying to push the ball around and make a game of it.

''But it is only one game in the pool. We have got to go to Thomond Park next week.

''But it was great to win and I would put that down to the work our forwards put in.

''We did well to stop them gaining a bous point at the end as they tried to run the ball. But the conditions helped up.''
