Edinburgh 23-16 ToulouseEdinburgh produced a fabulous second-half display to shock Heineken Cup holders Toulouse at Meadowbank on Sunday.
Trailing 13-6 at the break, two quick tries from Nathan Hines and Scott Murray put the home side in command.
But Toulouse rallied and an injury to Simon Webster seemed to disrupt Edinburgh's momentum.
The Scots held firm, however, and a late try by Brendan Laney sealed a famous victory.
Toulouse opened up an early six-point lead with penalties by Jean-Baptiste Elissalde and Benoit Baby.
But Laney and Paterson pulled Edinburgh level with penalties of their own before the French regained the lead just before half time.
Frederik Michalak skipped past Marcus di Rollo to close in on the Edinburgh line before offloading to Yannick Jauzion for the try. Elissalde added the conversion.
But Edinburgh refused to buckle and a brave decision just after the interval to run a penalty from under the posts paid off in style as Hines was powered over by fellow lock Murray.
Minutes later, Craig Smith picked up a loose lineout ball only to be brought down just short of the line.
Edinburgh managed to recycle the ball and, after further attempts by Laney and Paterson, Murray was helped over by skipper Todd Blackadder. Laney converted from a tricky angle to open up a five-point gap but then missed an easier opportunity to extend the lead when he sent a penalty well wide.
Webster took a heavy blow on the back of the head just after the hour mark and the lengthy delay as he was stretchered off appeared to unsettle the home side.
Toulouse stepped up a gear again, with Christian Labit providing the inspiration.
And when Allan Jacobsen was penalised for offside under French pressure, Elissalde reduced the deficit to two points with the penalty goal.
But Edinburgh weathered the storm and four minutes into injury time, Paterson's break created space for Laney to skip past three tackles to score in the corner.
Paterson's conversion attempt hit the post but the victory was Edinburgh's.
