Saracens winger James Short breaks away to score his side's match-winning try at Bath

Saracens staged a second half fightback to beat Bath and climb to third in the Premiership table.

Bath appeared to be in control when they led 13-3 at the break thanks to two penalties from centre Olly Barkley and a converted Nick Abendanon try.

Saracens' only first half points came from the boot of fly-half Owen Farrell.

But the visitors cut the deficit to three points with Kameli Ratuvou's converted score before James Short seized on an Abendanon error to win it.

Defeat left Bath without a home league win since the end of September and they remain eighth in the table.

Both sides were without key players because of international call-ups and injury, and it was Bath who drew first blood after 12 minutes when Barkley landed a penalty from 45 metres.

Saracens lost centre Adam Powell to a late hit by Abendanon, but the home full-back escaped a yellow card and won his side a penalty, which Barkley duly dispatched, when he was victim of a high tackle by Schalk Brits.

Abendanon then rubbed further salt into Saracens wounds when he grabbed an opportunist, if controversial, try, hacking the loose ball on to touch down after scrum-half Michael Claassens' kick deflected off referee Tim Wigglesworth.

Barkley's conversion put Bath 13-0 up but Farrell pulled three points back with a penalty after David Strettle's run took Sarries into the home side's 22.

Bath began the second half on the front foot but were punished for turning the ball over when Short hacked on Farrell's punt upfield and Ratouvou touched down.

Farrell duly added the conversion and then played a part in Short's winning try.

There seemed little danger when the Sarries stand-off slipped a grubber kick through to Abendanon, but his attempted clearance was charged down by Short, who was left with an easy run in to the line.

Bath threw everything at Saracens in the closing stages to try and rescue the game, but their hope evaporated when Barkley was shown a yellow card for a high tackle on Sam Stanley, even though Richard Wigglesworth missed the resulting penalty.

Bath head coach Steve Meehan:
"It's sometimes too easy to concentrate on the negatives. There were some real improvements in some of our play today.

"At various times when we had our attacking shape and structure correct, we were a real threat.

"Defensively, on our line speed and our intensity in the 'hit', we were very strong. There was a lot of good that went on in 60 of the 80 minutes.

"In that first 20 minutes of the second half Saracens came out and upped the intensity of their game. We needed to match that and find parity in our game.

"Unfortunately, we allowed them to dictate it and they got a couple of tries. There were three fortuitous tries in the match, they scored two of them."

Saracens head coach Mark McCall:
"I think that's as pleasing a result, given the circumstances, as we have had in the 18 months we've been together.

"It was all about showing unity. In that period of 30 minutes where we went 13-0 down, we had actually played quite well. I thought our line-out was exceptional. We thoroughly deserved to win the match."

On the performances of teenage fly-half Owen Farrell and centre Sam Stanley:
"I thought the two guys played wonderfully well. So did Jackson Wray at number eight, 19 years old as well.

"He's been playing outstandingly well for Bedford in the Championship and now looks like a Premiership player."
