Key questions League One's future

Andy Key

Leeds Carnegie director of rugby Andy Key fears National League One cannot sustain the professional game.

The Rugby Football Union is looking to restructure the division and make it fully professional, but many clubs are already struggling financially.

"Your head is saying it is probably questionable down the road," Key told BBC Radio Leeds.

"Television has to have more influence and we have to find the finances to support it somewhere in the game."

The issue will be discussed at an RFU council meeting on Friday.

Key added: "I really do hope Division One can be still a vital part of the professional game.

"I think it is good and will be good for the young players coming through.

"It's a great base for Premiership academy players to learn their trade and gain vital first-team experience."

BBC Radio Leeds will have full commentary of Leeds Carnegie away at the Cornish Pirates on 774 AM and DAB on Sunday from 13:50 GMT.
