| Friday, 17 January, 2003, 14:07 GMT Clubs' agreement breaks down ![]() Neath and Bridgend plan to form a merger The accord between Wales' Premier clubs over plans to restructure the game is in tatters after less than 20 hours. Neath and Bridgend are to hold a press conference at 1400 GMT today, where it is believed they will announce that their plans to merge are still ongoing. On Thursday it was thought that Neath had consented to merge with Swansea and Bridgend would go in with Pontypridd, as part of the clubs' proposals for five teams for next season. The WRU wants four provincial sides to represent Wales in Celtic and European competition next season and they will hold a press conference at 1600 GMT on Friday, expected to respond to the move from Neath and Bridgend.
He stressed that they had stayed loyal to the WRU and that they would be interested in a link-up with Cardiff, or any other reasonable plan. The union will meet on 23 January to discuss the proposals before them, at which point they will decide which option will go forward to an Extraordinary General Meeting. That meeting of Wales' 239 member clubs will be held on 23 February - a day after Wales play England in the Six Nations championship. "The clock is ticking - we have put a line in the sand," said Moffett. "This time next week, we intend to put a recommendation to the general committee." |
