| Tuesday, 3 December, 2002, 19:43 GMT Bridgend and Neath form alliance ![]() Bridgend and Neath could combine on the pitch Bridgend and Neath have revealed an audacious plan to merge into one team for European competitions. There are already discussions between the Welsh Rugby Union and the Premier clubs over the formation of provincial teams. But Bridgend and Neath have jumped the provincial gun by agreeing a deal to pool resources when entering the likes of the Heineken and Parker Pen Cups and the Celtic League. However, the two clubs will remain independent for the Welsh Premier and Principality Cup, safeguarding the history and traditions lodged at the Gnoll and the Brewery Field. With moves afoot to try and cut the number of top-flight clubs to four or five broadly provincial-based sides, Bridgend and Neath feared being swallowed by a larger neighbour. Representatives from the two clubs announced the move at a meeting of Premiership clubs on Tuesday. It was not welcomed wholeheartedly, with Llanelli chief executive Stuart Gallacher criticising the move. As Neath are owned by the WRU, Gallacher pointed out that such a deal could only have been struck with the knowledge of somebody within the governing body. It is a clear indication that the WRU is keen to move towards provincial rugby. New chief executive David Moffett has already warned that "probably no more than 150 players in Wales should get wages for playing the game". That suggests the target is no more than five professional outfits, but the plan has yet to be put before the union's 239 members. The move by Neath and Bridgend could spark a rush by the other Premier clubs to form similar alliances. |
