| Thursday, 12 December, 2002, 14:10 GMT No progress on provincial debate ![]() Moffett has called for a partnership for reform Welsh Premiership clubs and the Welsh Rugby Union have failed to reach an agreement over plans to introduce a provincial structure. WRU chief executive David Moffett met the clubs on Thursday to listen to their concerns over his plans for four provincial sides in Wales. The clubs want five 'superclubs' in south Wales, but have yet to agree upon which teams should be combined to play European and Celtic competitions. No apparent progress was made at the meeting, but both sides said the talks had been positive. Another meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, 19 December. "There is a fair chance that by next Thursday we will be able to come to the union and say 'these are our five sides'," said Premier clubs chairman Derrick King. Moffett, who took up his post at the beginning of December, wants to push his reform plans through as quickly as possible. He said: "Both groups are going away to do further work and by the Thursday of next week, we hope to get closer together." Moffett has also warned that further jobs are to go in the union, saying the finances are poor and must be brought under control. "The big issue is the debt. I've asked all divisional managers to come back with cost savings." |
