Ed Dawson scored in each half for Jersey at St Peter |
Two tries from winger Ed Dawson helped Jersey to a 29-9 win over fellow promotion-hopefuls Richmond. Late pressure, including a Dan Hawkes drop goal and last-minute try from James Copsey, was not enough to secure a bonus point for Jersey. All of the visitors' scores came from the boot of Ross Broadfoot in the opening 25 minutes. The win leaves the islanders second in National Two South, five points above Richmond and with a game in hand. A bumper crowd at St Peter saw Jersey go behind in the early stages, but a penalty from Michael Le Bourgeois and Dawson's first try of the afternoon gave the Reds a 10-3 lead after 10 minutes. Two further penalties from Broadfoot made it 10-9 at the break, but Jersey dominated the second half to secure their sixth league win in a row.
Jersey head coach Ben Harvey told BBC Radio Jersey: "I thought the first half we stuttered a little bit and we didn't play in the right areas. "But the second half the boys knew what to do really - I thought our lads were terrific. "It's about staying focussed, it's only one game, and I still don't think it's the best we've played this year." Richmond boss Steve Hill told BBC Radio Jersey: "I thought overall Jersey probably were the better side and they took their opportunities well. "I was disappointed with the referee's decision to sin-bin our lock - the touch judge was four feet away and saw nothing wrong at all. "But don't take any credit away from Jersey, in the last 15 minutes they got stronger and took two very good tries. "I think there's still an awful lot to play for [this season]."
