Bristol scrum half Robbie Shaw misses start of season

Robbie Shaw was injured in April

Bristol scrum half Robbie Shaw will miss the early part of the new Championship season while he recovers from a knee injury.

The 26-year-old ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament before the play-off clash with Cornish Pirates in April.

Confirmation of Shaw's absence means that Bristol have only Sam Alford on their books as a recognised scrum half.

The club have lost the experience of New Zealander Jason Spice, who had his contract cancelled by mutual consent.

Bath-born Alford, who joined Bristol from Cornish All Blacks, has started just three senior games.

Bristol, who lost the play-off final to Exeter Chiefs in May, begin the Championship campaign at home to Rotherham on 28 August.
