Kent battle back to beat Warwickshire in Plate final
Kent pipped Warwickshire to the County Championship Plate with a 33-27 extra-time victory in Greenwich on Saturday.
Warwickshire had led 27-10 going in the final quarter of the match before Kent fought back.
Tom White's boot settled the match with two penalties after he had helped level the scores.
Both teams were already assured of promotion to the top level of the Bill Beaumont Cup ahead of the final after winning their respective leagues.
Despite the late fight-back, Kent made the early in-roads by scampering into a 10-0 lead courtesy of Viliame Stephens' try which was converted by Paul Humphreys, who then kicked a penalty.
But Warwickshire propelled themselves to the brink of a second victory in four years thanks to tries from Joe Marston, Phil Reed and Nigel Mukarati and the boot of Hugh Thomas, with three conversions and two penalties.
Kent had other ideas though and hit back to force extra-time thanks initially to Ricky MckIntos's effort, converted by White.
The full-back then added a penalty before converting Jack Knight's late try to level the scores.
White continued his success-rate in extra-time by kicking two further penalties to clinch the silverware.
And while Kent celebrated, the Warwickshire coach Peter Glackin told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire he was proud of his players.
He said: "It's been a pleasure to work with them and all the coaching staff.
"I wouldn't say we fell short because two kicks at goal in an extra 20 minutes - we were just unlucky in the end."
