Esher sign Coventry's Phil Mackenzie

Esher have signed Canada international Phil Mackenzie from Coventry on a one-year contract.

The 23-year-old was recommended to Esher director of rugby Mike Schmid by London Wasps boss Tony Hanks and Canada sevens chief Morgan Williams.

"He is an exciting prospect who will add size and pace to our backline," said Schmid.

"He normally plays at 13 but can also play 12 and on the wing. I'm sure he'll suit our style of open rugby."

Mackenzie's arrival follows that of fly-half Mike Whitehead, who joined Esher from Rotherham last week.

Schmid has come to an arrangement with Hanks that will see the Mackenzie train with Wasps.

Mackenzie is currently back in his homeland in a bid to make the Canada squad for the Churchill Cup.
