Shanahan hails rampant Cambridge

Cambridge player-coach James Shanahan has praised his side after their 69-14 win over Blackheath.

The victory means Shanahan's men move to fourth in National One after last week's defeat at Tynedale.

The 32-year-old told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "That's more like it. It's a stepping stone we needed to take and we've got seven tries.

"Our wide game was really on top form today and our contact skills were really spot on."

The result was Cambridge's most comprehensive of the season as they look to build on their second-placed finish in the last campaign.

But Shanahan believes his side can still improve their defensive form.

"I still think they were fairly weak tries to give away. We had those 10 or 15 minute periods where we lost some composure.

"But we can't expect to dominate a game for 80 minutes. You will have your momentum swings here and there."

Cambridge travel to Manchester on Saturday to face Sedgley Park.
