Bristol scored a late try to earn a hard-fought victory at home to London Welsh in their opening Championship fixture of the season.

The scores were tied at 23-23 when winger Lee Robinson touched down with just one minute on the clock.

Bristol trailed by six points after the break before adding two penalties.

"I'm really pleased with the win and with the team spirit that never gave in right until the end," Bristol head coach Paul Hull told BBC Radio Bristol.

"You've got to remember that it's a new team and and a lot of players making their debuts.

"There were a lot of players really nervous and you could see that in the early exchanges.

"We did well with turnover ball. Our back three shone really well today and we finished well," added Hull.

Bristol opened the scoring with a 14th minute converted try from Tom Arscott to go 7-0 up.

London Welsh hit back with three penalties to go ahead 9-7 before a Dan Norton try just before the break gave Bristol a 14-9 half-time lead.

Bristol extended their lead to 17-9 before two London Welsh tries put the visitors 23-17 up.

A crowd of over 5,000 at the Memorial Stadium then saw Adrian Jarvis kick two penalties for Bristol before Robinson slid over in the corner to snatch a win.

"They [the supporters] are going to be a massive boost for us this season," said Paul Hull.

"There'll be a lot of teams coming here for the first time and we need that sixteenth man and they came here and showed that."
