Redruth unveil Jacques as captain

Redruth have announced that prop Darren Jacques will captain the side in National League One next season.

Jacques, 28, has not missed a senior game for three years and is highly regarded by head coach Nigel Hambly.

Hambly told BBC Sport: "Darren's very consistent, he holds the club's record for consecutive appearances and the guys respect the way he plays."

The 18st 3lbs prop has played for England Counties, Cornwall and the Barbarians during his career.

Hambly believes the added responsibility of captaincy will help Jacques take his game to the next level.

"I feel I can pull a bit extra out of Darren and I'm sure that he'll respond in a positive way," he added.

Redruth had a disappointing end to the 2008/9 season, finishing third in National Two behind Cambridge and Birmingham after suffering a dip in results at the end of the campaign.

And mounting another promotion challenge is not Hambly's immediate priority as pre-season training gets underway at the club.

"Our aim is to be competitive," Hambly said.

"It's going to be a very tough league next year with five teams coming down, but I'm confident with the squad we've got that we can be competitive."
