Coventry win eases fear of drop

Coventry Rugby Club

Coventry won for the first time in a month with a 32-13 National League One victory at bottom club Otley.

A run of three defeats had raised concerns about relegation.

But, after being held 10-10 at the break, two second-half Donovan Sanders tries and one from Laurie McGlone saw Cov comfortably home.

Fly-half Ben Russell marked his return with 14 points, kicking three conversions and a penalty to add to his own first-half charge-down try.

After Sanders' second try had secured the extra bonus point, Tommy Hayes rounded things off with a last-minute penalty.

And, with four games left, that helped leave ninth-placed Cov eight points clear of local rivals Moseley, who are top of the five-team danger zone in 12th.

Director of Rugby Phil Maynard told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire: "Sometimes you have to win ugly.

"Hopefully, the pressure is off but we are still not out of the fire. We need two or three more wins out of the last four games."

Coventry now entertain Exeter at the Butts Park Arena on Saturday (4 April, 1500 GMT).

And they will be hoping to improve on the 45-8 hammering they suffered down in Devon in November.
