Otley to offer players pay deal

Otley Rugby Club
Otley have won two league games this season

Otley will hold another meeting with their players on Thursday night to try and thrash out a deal over pay.

The West Yorkshire club, who are bottom of National One, have been hit hard by the economic downturn and have been unable to pay players since January.

"The club is doing everything it possible can to help the players," head coach Peter Clegg told BBC Radio Leeds.

"A proposal for pay for the rest of the season will be put forward, which I think the players will accept."

Otley's financial problems combined with injuries meant they could only field three substitutes in their defeat at London Welsh, all of which where carrying injuries.

Clegg added: "This proposal isn't utopia but it shows the commitment of the club to the players and that Otley appreciate the situation the players are in.

"Otley are trying to fulfil as much of their commitments to the players as possible.

"The players' spirit has been fantastic through all this and they are battling together. The only way we can raise money is with people coming down and watching quality rugby.

"We have Coventry at home on Saturday and the more fans that come and watch the more money there will be for the players.

"Nothing would please me more than to get a bumper crowd at Cross Green on Saturday to reward the players and their great efforts."
