Malvern were unlikely winners against Chester at Spring Lane |
Malvern pulled off the shock result in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup by knocking out holders Chester at Spring Lane at the weekend. Malvern have not won a league game this season and were missing several first-team players. But they managed to secure a 21-16 victory over the side who won the trophy at Twickenham last season. Meanwhile Luctonians went out of the EDF National Trophy after being beaten 24-10 at Rugby Lions. Malvern were in danger of recording another defeat when Chester struck early with a third minute penalty from stand-off Tom Foden, the visitors then crossed the line for two tries. But Tom Beechey started Malvern's fight-back with a 37th minute try which Chris Hooper converted. Two minutes later winger Greg Summers raced clear to score, with Hooper again converting to put Malvern ahead at the break. | I'm so pleased for the lads and the coaching team |
Hooker Luke Greenwood acted as an extra back to score another try and set up Hooper's conversion five minutes into the half. Chester pulled back a penalty on 50 minutes to take them within a score of Malvern's total before both sides missed two penalties each as the game drew to a close. Following their shock win Malvern's director of rugby, David Robins, told BBC Hereford & Worcester: "I'm so pleased for the lads and the coaching team. "Their belief hasn't wavered through some fairly awful times over the last three months and we have now given our supporters something to cheer about."
