Lord will lead out Cornwall at Twickenham (Alex Folkes/Fishnik.com) |
Cornwall captain Josh Lord says his squad are aiming to reignite the duchy's interest in county rugby when they play at Twickenham on Sunday. The Cornish face Northumberland in the County Shield final, their first appearance at Twickenham since 2001. "I think there's been a lot spoken about the county championships and how county rugby's dead and no-one likes it any more," he told BBC Radio Cornwall. "Yet the way we've been playing, we've made people want to come and watch." Lord hopes that the extra people who make the trip to Twickenham will come and watch Cornwall next year when they are back in the top-flight of county rugby. "Hopefully a lot more people will make the trip and come up to Twickenham and next year we'll get more people to watch and realise that county rugby isn't dead at all," Lord added. And Lord says his team are focused on making sure they come away with the shield: "All the boys have put so much effort in over the past three games that to go there and come away without any silverware would be massively disappointing. "It's obviously great that we've got there, but now that we're there we've got to win the match."
