Rogers confirms return to league
Mat Rogers makes a point during a Wallabies training session
Rogers has won 41 caps since 2002
Australia full-back Mat Rogers has confirmed he will return to rugby league with new NRL franchise Gold Coast Titans after the 2007 World Cup.

"It's great opportunity to start afresh," said the 30-year-old former Cronulla Sharks winger, who has penned a two-year deal with the Titans.

Rogers said he remained committed to the Wallabies for the next 12 months.

"It'd be good to finish with a bang and I can move on knowing that I have achieved everything," he said.

ARU chief executive Gary Flowers said Rogers remained an integral part of Australia's World Cup plans and his organisation respected his decision to switch back to the 13-a-side code.

He's an absolute freak of a player and it's fantastic to get him back in our game

"It is a mark of Mat's integrity that he did not try to play the ARU off against the Gold Coast in an attempt to push up his value," said Flowers.

"He is a champion player and a great bloke, and we totally respect his decision."

Gold Coast chief executive Michael Searle said he was not concerned about signing a player in his 30s.

"He's an athlete," Searle said. "He's an absolute freak of a player and it's fantastic to get him back in our game."

Rogers, who has played 41 Tests for the Wallabies, missed the end of the recent Tri-Nations with a knee injury.

But he is expected to return to training early next month and feature on the Wallabies' November tour of Europe.

It's in the best interests of himself and his family

Rogers, son of the late rugby league legend Steve, played seven league Tests for Australia from 1998 to 2000, featuring in their 2000 World Cup-winning team.

He also represented Queensland five times in the State of Origin series before switching codes in 2001.

He made his Wallabies debut against France in 2002.

Australian Rugby Union chief executive Gary Flowers said: "I respect his right to make a decision about his future.

"It's in the best interests of himself and his family. He has been a great Wallaby and I wish him all the best for the future."
